With the continuing warm weather maybe your bees are not fully in their winter clusters and are still foraging on ivy or Himalayan balsam.

But soon mice will be looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter months, so make sure you have put mouse guards on your hives which look really cosy! Simply use drawing pins to attach them to either wooden or polyhives.

Mice are able to flatten themselves to get under reduced entrances but can’t get through the round holes in the mouse guard.

Failure to put these guards on could mean that mice will take over a hive, particularly a weak one, destroy the comb, and what remains will need to be disposed of and the frames and hive scrubbed clean before re-using.

Not the best start to the new season next Spring!
